How to: pair new Z fin with your board?

Before first use, please take some time to properly fit and pair the board and fin together.

Since board box tolerances vary significantly between manufacturers, our fins are produced with a slightly oversized base. This ensures that the fin will not become loose in the fin box.

As a result, the fin may not fit freely into the fin box at first. In such cases, the fin base should be lightly sanded until a proper fit is achieved.

To do this:

  • Mount the fin onto the board and lightly tighten the screws (5 Nm). If the edge of the fin is not flush with the edge of the board, the fin head needs to be sanded.

  • The correct sanding areas will usually appear as white marks on the fin after fitting.

Try to identify where the fin is too tight, sand a small amount off, and test the fit again by tightening the screws.

Repeat the process until the edge of the fin sits perfectly flush with the board surface.

Next is the question of fin bolts. Like all other fin manufacturers, we also use M6 size bolts. However, all fins are shipped without bolts because the bolt length depends on the board.

Be careful at the start to ensure the bolt you use is not too long. A bolt that is too long will crush the fin head and the fin may lose some of its performance.

Follow the 5Nm rule and if you suspect the bolt is too long, use a shorter bolt. A bolt of minimum length must make 6 full turns in the thread.

* broken fin base is not covered with warranty.
